Hello, my name is Charlene, I am the founder of Empowered Adventures and here is our story.
While sitting with my dad one day we were discussing what he wanted to do with some money that had come in. My entire life he had talked of going to Alaska one day, so I suggested that. He shook his head and said, “Those were the dreams of a young man, what could I do in Alaska now at 89?”
Challenge accepted… And so began the planning of my first Empowered Adventure! I asked him to share all the things he had dreamed of doing in Alaska and without hesitation he recited the list which included salmon and halibut fishing, hiking, staying in cabins, going to Denali National Park, seeing Alaska wildlife, sitting by a river, cooking hotdogs over a fire…
I got busy calling businesses, meeting people who had the same goal as I did (to give dad the trip of a lifetime) and mapping out literally every step of the journey with his specific abilities in mind. He could only walk for about 10 minutes at a time so our “hikes” would need to have resting spots. He is diabetic so meals and meds would have to be spaced out appropriately with snacks when out and about. Our excursions would need to have resting places and assistance if needed (especially when fishing). I found lodging that was conveniently located so his walking was minimized…
And did I mention all the places along the way for him to sit and soak up the beauty he had longed to be immersed in his entire life? It was truly the trip of a lifetime for not only dad but for my sister and I. I helped my dad realize a dream through that adventure but I also realized something about myself, I LOVE helping make dreams a reality in the presence of physical limitations. I became aware of how challenging travel can be in an industry that caters 20-30 year olds with no physical challenges. Yet with modifications, those same adventures could be experienced and be just as amazing! With 34 years of nursing experience and a lifelong passion for travel, I knew this was the perfect foundation to build a business—and a team—that shares the same dedication, vision, and enthusiasm for accessible journeys.

There are two options available. We can do the research for you, send you the information so you can book your own trip … or you can allow us to do the planning and booking for you.
Absolutely! With the hours of research that goes into each adventure we discover the things you can do or provide assistance needed to get you to the things you desire to do and see.
Yes! Whatever the need, one of our travel companions or Registered Nurses can accompany guests to assist with any mobility, logistical, or medical assistance required.
They will also make sure that any excursions they embark on are within their specific abilities.
We have two options for accompanied travel: A Travel Companion who comes with you and is as involved as you would like them to be.
Or the Healthcare Travel Companion who is there to assist those who have medical needs that could hinder travel if not monitored.
Not at all, the beauty of our services are that they are arranged online and if we are accompanying you we will come to you and begin our adventure together from your homebase.
No, due to our policies our RN companions cannot administer medications. They can however, be on top of medication schedules and give reminders.
Your travel companion cannot stay in your room due to our policies and the legalities of sharing a room.
If traveling requires overnight lodging, for example, a cruise adventure, an additional room or cabin for the companion must be purchased when travel warrants an overnight stay.
We will do our best to ensure our travelers and their companions occupy either adjoining or the nearest possible rooms available. In addition, we will be available 24/7 to assist our travelers if needed at night.
Our cancellation policy will be included with your Empowered Adventures Travel Agreement and Terms and Conditions. That said, Empowered Adventures has a generous cancellation policy, we understand how things can change without warning.
We have no control over reservations made with vendors however, even if booked through Empowered Adventures, they will be subject to the cancellation policies of each individual vendor.
Absolutely! Sometimes the most stressful part of vacation is getting to and through the departing airport and then navigating a new airport on the other end. With Empowered Adventures you can start your journey from your home with your travel companion by your side…let the journey begin!
